Stilbaai is a popular coastal town and holiday destination these days, but fishing used to be one of the main sources of income for the residents who lived there.  Fishing is still being practices today, and fishing boats will always be associated with these towns.

In Stilbaai, the Wafra was well known and has quite a sad history.  The commercial fishing boat left the harbour on 25 April 2002 for the last time.  It was not seen again after then.  The boat and its crew of eight went missing in the mist and got stranded on a beach close by.  Six of the 8 crew members lost their lives.

According to an article in the Suid-Kaap Forum newspaper (dd June 7, 2012) between 35 and 40 fisherman’s boats returned to the harbour for the funeral on May 1st, 2002.

The Wafra later became a well-known beacon next to the N2 at the turn-off to Stilbaai.  It was replaced in 2011 by the current boat that is an extremely popular ‘photo stop’ for holiday makers.  The Wafra was restored and can now be visited as a monument in the harbour of Stilbaai.

This 40 x 50cm canvas of this landmark on the N2 has 26 colours and is not too difficult.  Each box contains a stretched, printed and numbered canvas, paint, brushes and a page detailing the numbers for an extra reference.
