Pierneef Jonkershoek
Pierneef Jonkershoek
Paint your own Pierneef!! I have been wanting to say that for a long time!
Jacob Hendrik Pierneef is one of South Africa's most well-know painters, known for his specific and characteristic style he painted the South African landscape with. He had a way of simplifying images, without compromising on composition, he always produced a well-balanced image, accurately portraying the peaceful and tranquil environment of the South African landscapes.
This specific painting is called Farm Jonkershoek with Twin Peaks beyond, Stellenbosch and Pierneef painted it in 1928. This image is both instantly recognisable as a Pierneef and uniquely different from his usual style. This was a significant time in his career, as he was starting to apply the modernist influence he gained while travelling in Europe in 1925 - 1926. This rather large painting was one of the paintings he exhibited in 1928 in Pretoria at an exhibition which was seen as 'futuristic' and mostly unsuccessful. After none of the paintings sold at the exhibition, he reverted back to a more familiar and 'acceptable' version of his old style, in order to make a living., i.e to please the buying public and sell some paintings.
This painting was later bought by a professor from Pretoria University, and it apparently hang in his study and remained in the du Toit family until 2017, when it set a new world record for a Pierneef sold at auction - for just under R20 500 000.
Pierneef displays a very Art Nouveau style in this painting and our 40 x 50cm version of this painting is not too difficult to paint, with 17 colours. Each box contains a stretched, printed and numbered canvas, paint, brushes and a page detailing the numbers for an extra reference.
