Dancers in Blue or sometimes called Blue Dancers, is an impressionist oil painting, painted by Edgar Degas in 1890. Ballerinas were one of the artist's favourite subjects. It is believed that his interest in ballet stemmed from his interest in the body and how it moves. In this painting, although it is a frozen image of dancers, their movement is almost tangible and it just seems as if they move perfectly in sync.
'Colour is the essential element of the artwork as the bright shades grasp the viewer's attention. While the colours remain incredibly bold, the artist uses a dark grey to contour the backs of the ballerinas to add depth to the painting rather than bold figures.'
The painting currently lives in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.
This 40 x 50cm canvas is not too challenging and has 29 colours. Each box contains a stretched, printed and numbered canvas, paint, brushes and a page detailing the numbers for an extra reference.
